坐東部幹線時，邊欣賞沿途海景，邊吃著池上飯包，似乎特別對味。對我們來說，池上飯包的懷舊是新潮，但池上便當實則很多東部人的鄉愁。
1930年代，從花蓮到臺東，慢車要十二小時，快車要八小時。很多東部人往返兩地往往得餓個一兩餐。池上火車站是花東鐵路的中繼站，月臺上一份五毛錢，用油紙包著的番薯餅，成為池上飯包的前身。
蕃薯餅後來演變成第一代的「池上飯包」，用池上米炊製成米飯後，捏成三角形飯團，放在竹葉上。其上舖放卜肉、黃菜頭、烤肉乾、蛋餅、小蝦和麵粉油炸成的蝦仔炸（炸蝦餅）。包裝後再用麻繩繫牢，因為很有特色又僅此一家，一開始叫賣便大獲旅客青睞。
至於池上飯包的招牌包裝「木盒」，則有一段臺灣人腦筋動得快的故事。有個原本在嘉義「嘉正堂」賣木吉他的商人，向池上飯包推銷，希望能將飯包的包裝換成製造吉他的木片，這包裝在當時是創舉，到了今天則成為既環保又傳統的特色。2000年，集山機構接手經營，將六十年老店池上飯包重新命名為「悟饕池上飯包」，開始在全臺流行，也開始有各種菜式可以選擇。
Wating Chishang lunch box when taking the eastbound train and appreciating the ocean views is highly enjoyable. For some the old-fashion Chishang lunch box could be a trend but it is the nostalgia for many people from eastern Taiwan.
In the 1930s, the train took between 8~12 hours to arrive from Hualian to Taidung. Many people from eastern Taiwan travelling between the two places often had to starve for 1 to 2 meals. Chishang Train Station was the relay station of Hualian-Taidung railway and the sweet potato pastry, sold at NT0.5 at the platform, became the former Chishang lunch box.
The sweet potato pastry became the first-generation “Chishang Lunch Box.” After Chishang rice was cooked and formed into triangular rice snack and placed on bamboo leave, topped with pork, vegetables, dried shrimp and other ingredients. The rice was then wrapped by hemp rope and became popular among travelers since it was the only one available.
The typical package of Chishang lunch box originated from a businessperson selling wooden guitar in Jiayi at the time. He intended to replace the package for Chishang lunch box into wooden sheet used for manufacturing guitars. It was an innovation back then but it is now eco-friendly and traditional feature. In 2000, Jishan Institute took over the management and renamed the 60-year-olld Chishang Lunch Box into Wu-Tau Chishang Lunch Box and it became popular in Taiwan with more options available.
木盒包裝是池上飯包好吃的祕訣
池上飯包程哲瑋經理說：「池上飯包的包裝從古早的油紙，到月桃葉包裝並以麻繩包起來，再來是1976年的木盒包裝，逐漸成為池上飯包的代表。木盒包裝其實很不好做，因為木盒要摺出弧度，只能純手工來折。」但為什麼要堅持用木盒包裝呢？程經理解釋：「木盒很環保，而且木盒跟紙盒不同，木盒可以排出水氣，所以飯包裡面各種菜的味道不會混在一起。」原來這是池上飯包之所以能在火車上販售，讓客人早上買，放到中午吃卻依然美味的祕訣！
2002年，池上飯包入選十大風雲商品，同年並成立池上飯包博物館。2009年，池上飯包文化故事館落成，當時為了重現當年的情景，花了整整一年半時間，找到台鐵於1961年引進日本東急車廠製作的兩台火車，故事館中還有「早期復古教室」，為的是想讓遊客除了在故事館中吃飯用餐，還能身歷其境，體會台灣早年生活的情景。
在了解池上飯包的精神「飯包是做給出外人吃的，要用心做」之後，或許吃這個飯包時會更有滋味吧！
Wooden package is the secret to delicious Chishang Lunch Box
Wu-Tau Manager Zhe-Wei Cheng mentioned: “The package of Chishang Lunch Box changed from the early oiled paper to be wrapped in shell-flower leave and tied with hemp rope, then the wooden box from 1976, which gradually became the representative of Chishang lunch box. Moisture can be dissipated from the wooden box, keeping all flavors of side dishes separate, so that this is why Chishang lunch box remains delicious after some time.
In 2002 Chishang lunch box was selected as the top ten products while the Chishang Fabnao (Lunch Box) Museum was established and completed in 2009. To reproduce the scenes, the museum spent one year and half and found the two trains made by Tokyo Factory and introduced by Taiwan Railway in 1961. The “early retro classroom” of the museum simulated the early life of Taiwan for tourists to experience.
The lunch box will taste more delicious once the customers understand the spirit of Chishang lunch box is “prepared for travelers.”
