高雄市旗山是屏東、高雄山區到高雄市區的必經門戶,過去旗山農會曾是全台最有富有的農會,現在旗山老街已是著名的觀光景點,在此地發展的「枝仔冰城」從第一代賣冰已經過八十幾年,與旗山地區一同成長茁壯。

第一代經營者鄭城在大兒子出世時,希冀兒子長成充滿氣概的男子漢,從原本賣鬆軟的麻糬,改賣口感紮實堅硬的冰棒,他每天騎著腳踏車,在旗山沿街叫賣,在沒有冰箱的年代冰是最好的消暑品,除了芋頭、紅豆等基本款的冰棒,招牌香蕉清冰更是令人讚不絕口,它不像現在的霜淇淋或冰棒,需要複雜的機器與加工,僅是在清冰加上傳統普遍使用的香蕉油,冰涼清爽的口感成為當地人在炎炎夏日的小確幸。由於味美質佳,風味獨具,建立起良好商譽和口碑,在民國15年,從小攤轉為店面,稱之「鄭城冰枝屋」;民國40年又更名為「旗山冰果室」,因賣冰的關係,街坊鄰居皆稱呼他「枝仔冰─城」,到了第二代鄭國勝便沿用這個大家熟知的綽號「枝仔冰城」作為商標。

「枝仔冰城」一路走來堅持使用四百多年前來自宜蘭、常出口至日本的北蕉,特性不好種植、口感卻比其他品種紮實,但到了六零年代,國內進行農業改良,好種植又可長時間久放的「新北蕉」成為新寵,北蕉的生產量漸漸不及新北蕉,所幸有「蕉城」美名的旗山,溫度及濕度皆適合栽種北蕉,「枝仔冰城」利用地利之便,方便取得食材,落實在地企業使用在地食材的理念。

Qishan is a key area for accessing Pingtung, mountains in Kaohsiung, and downtown Kaohsiung. In the past, Qishan Farmers’ Association was the wealthiest farmers’ association in Taiwan, and now Qishan Old Street has become a well known tourist destination. The KI A PENG SIAN (meaning City of Popsicles) has been selling frozen snack foods for the past 80 years or so since the first generation, therefore it has grown and prospered with Qishan. 

When Sian Cheng, the oldest son of the founder was born, he hoped that his son would grow up to become a stand-up man, therefore he changed from selling soft, spongy mochi to solid textured popsicles. He rode his bicycle and peddled popsicles along the streets of Qishan everyday. At the time, there were no refrigerators and popsicle was the best product to quench the summer heat. Besides basic flavors such as taro and adzuki beans, the signature banana clear ice was even more popular. Unlike modern soft serve or popsicles that require complex machinery and processing, banana clear ice is made by adding a drizzle of banana oil over clear ice, and the cool, refreshing texture has become a taste of happiness of local residents in the searing summer heat. 

Due to its wonderful flavor and unique taste, the business gradually accumulated goodwill and reputation. In 1926, it transformed from a small stall into a restaurant called Zheng Sian Ki A Peng House. In 1951, it was renamed Qishan Ice Cream Parlor, and the owner’s neighbors all referred to the owner as “Popsicle Zheng”, which is pronounced “KI A PENG SIAN” in Taiwanese dialect. When the second generation successor Guo-Sheng Zheng took over the business, he used the widely recognized nickname KI A PENG SIAN as the trademark. 

KI A PENG SIAN has insisted on using only Giant Cavendishii AAA, a banana variety cultivated in Yilan sine 4 centuries ago and often exported to Japan. Albeit more difficult to cultivate, Giant Cavendishii AAA offers a more substantial texture compared to other banana varieties. By the 1970s, due to agricultural reform, Banana Cavendish became the new sensation because it is easy to cultivate and it can be restaurantd for longer periods of time. As a result, Giant Cavendishii AAA’s production volume gradually declined to less than that of Banana Cavendish. Fortunately, the temperature and humidity of “Banana City” Qishan is conducive for cultivating Giant Cavendishii AAA, and KI A PENG SIAN took advantage of the geographical convenience to implement its philosophy of utilizing local food ingredients. 

 

由於連鎖店崛起,將目標放在連鎖拓展的第二代接手人鄭國勝,認為不能畫地自限於南部地區,有擴充品牌的必要性,決定廣納人才,將原前店後廠的冰菓室轉為公司化,商品加入手工冰品系列。到了七零年代,為了讓客人早上吃冰,中午接著在店內使用中餐,將簡餐類加入菜單,並開發伴手禮香蕉蛋捲、香蕉旺來酥、香蕉雪糕等,讓來旗山的觀光客能滿載而歸,他們也是第一家將潤餅冰商品化的公司。

「枝仔冰城」總店在旗山佇立已久,已成為旗山的知名地標、當地人習慣的風景。許多人在這裡獲得第一次滿分的獎賞、與男友共度的第一次約會等,飽含許多人的回憶。目前的經營者鄭宇程就提到,大學時的教官曾興奮地跑來他說,第一次約會就是在他家開的「枝仔冰城」;前義大犀牛隊總教練、生在美濃的徐生明,在民國60年少棒得冠軍也是整隊到此慶祝。「枝仔冰城」因與顧客的回憶緊密連結,獲得不少支持,有一下飛機就飛奔來的客人、即使拄著助行器也要來吃冰的老顧客,甚至還有每天都要來吃一杯冰的哈士奇,這些都是「枝仔冰城」永續經營的重要支柱。

目前已有五家直營店的「枝仔冰城」,秉持著前兩代的品牌精神,用心做好每一項產品,成為旗山的精神象徵。

Due to the emergence of chain restaurants, the second generation owner Guo-Sheng Zheng focused his goal in developing chain restaurants and believes that they should not be restricted to southern Taiwan. Deeming brand expansion necessary, he decided to recruit more talents and corporatize the ice cream parlor that originally consisted of a front-shop-back-factory structure. Handmade frozen treats were also added to the product lineup. By the 1980s, in order to enable his patrons to enjoy frozen snack foods in the morning and lunch at noon, he further incorporated set meals into the menu. He also developed souvenirs including banana egg rolls, banana cakes and banana ice creams so that tourists coming to Qishan can return home with plenty of delicious gifts. This is the first company in Taiwan to commercialize spring roll ice creams. 

Currently with 5 wholly owned restaurants, KI A PENG SIAN upholds the brand spirit passed down for 2 generations to manufacture the best products and become the symbolic icon of Qishan. 

 

芋仔聖代:聽客人建議所開發的產品,以香蕉清冰為底加上自熬的蜜紅豆與芋仔冰淇淋。芋仔是採用台灣檳榔芋,六月時選自大甲,十月則選自甲仙,散發濃郁香氣。

Taro sundae: This product is developed as per the patrons’ suggestions by adding home stewed sweet adzuki beans and taro ice cream on top of the banana clear ice. Taiwanese betel nut taro from Dajia (June) and Jiaxian (October) is used to give the rich aroma.

香蕉聖代:以香蕉清冰做基底加上大球香草冰淇淋,在旁邊插上新鮮香蕉切片,並灑上香蕉蛋捲酥,上面插上香蕉脆片,每一口都能吃到香蕉味。

Banana sundae: Large scoops of strawberry ice cream are added on top of the banana clear ice, this is garnished with banana slices, banana egg roll crumbles and banana crisps to ensure wholesome banana flavor.

絕代雙蕉:為枝仔冰城的熱門伴手禮,香蕉蛋捲和香蕉旺來酥的雙組合。蛋捲成分為隆昌牧場的雞蛋、林鳳營的牛奶與旗山北蕉;旺來酥外觀為小香蕉,可口又可愛。

Absolute banana gift box: The popular souvenir of KI A PENG SIAN consists of banana egg rolls and banana cakes. The egg rolls are made from eggs produced by Long Chung and high quality milk from Lin Feng Ying. The delicious banana cakes have a cute banana-like appearance

南瓜海洋濃湯煲:新鮮南瓜熬製的南瓜濃湯,加入豆腐、杏鮑菇、蘑菇與海鮮(魚、蟹、蛤蠣、鮮蝦),為店內的人氣簡餐。

Seafood pumpkin casserole: The pumpkin casserole is stewed using fresh pumpkins and it is laden with mouthwatering ingredients such as tofu, king trumpet mushroom, mushroom and seafood (fish, crab, clam, shrimp), making it a popular set meal of the restaurant.

香蕉雪糕與戀夏系列雙色鮮果冰棒:香蕉雪糕採用旗山香蕉果肉搭配巧克力脆皮。經典傳統冰棒採用國產鮮奶搭配鮮果(鳳梨、百香瓜、葡萄),是濃郁又清爽的水果冰品。

Banana ice cream and classic traditional popsicle: Banana ice cream is made from Qishan bananas and coated with chocolate crust. The classic traditional popsicle is made from domestically produced milk and fresh fruits (pineapple, melon, grapes), making it a creamy yet refreshing fruit frozen dessert.
